Our story

Sherwood Schwartz had some far-fetched ideas for television shows.

How about a boat load of people shipwrecked on an island when the weather started getting rough and the tiny ship was tossed…. You know the rest.

And then there’s the one about the single dad who meets a single mom and decide it was much more than a hunch: that this group could somehow form a family. Absurd, right?

Nine years of unsuccessfully trying to date while raising four kids had led me to concede that parenting was something I’d be finishing on my own. Only on TV, after all, would any woman in her right mind consider taking on the task of blending six kids into one family.

Then came Sandie

It started like so many others had: a profile on Match.com. A pithy note from me elicited a similarly pithy response. We batted notes back and forth a couple times before deciding to risk meeting for a cup of coffee.

Time spent and scars earned had taught me: meeting online demanded a system, a process. Mine was simple: type notes, talk on the phone, meet for coffee, etc. Sandie was quick on the draw in her replies (liked that). When we spoke on the phone, she was a mix of fun and feisty (REALLY like that). So, we decided to try a cup of coffee.

Controlled expectations

Neither of us were in rabid pursuit of relationship at the time we decided to meet. I’d put the brakes on anything serious. Too much on my plate. Too little time for the work relationships had proven to be so far.

We decided to meet at the Starbucks on Memorial at Highway 6; it was on my way for a trip to Austin. 11am. I figured 30-40 minutes. Meet. Talk. Maybe plan a lunch later. (Lunch was my next step in the process.) I had given any more thought to it than that. Another stop. Another cup of coffee.

Parked the car. Walked in. Turned the corner. My eyes landed on Sandie and my heart said, “THERE you are.”

When you know….

There’s a song from the movie Serendipity sung by Shawn Colvin that says “when you know that you know….”

In a moment I knew.

I still do.

That’s why I can’t wait to say, “I do.”

Who knew Sherwood Schwartz could be so right?
